The Surprise Onion

This August, I was asked to help throw the most epic surprise party for one of my best friend’s 30th birthday. By the time it was over, I was physically, mentally and emotionally drained. It was like a surprise onion. Each layer of the onion was a heartwarming surprise for our birthday girl, followed by all the tears in true onion fashion. Here’s how it went down.

The party began with the standard “SURPRISE!!!!!” when the birthday girl arrived. She was shocked and we got her so good! THEN. Her boyfriend’s family all the way from Detroit pop out. Cue more happy tears. Once she could wrap her head around what was going on, boom. Her family from Miami arrived! Yes, you guessed it- happy tears!

We ate a feast of deliciousness prepared by our hostess with the mostess, Kelsy! After circling up to blow out the candles, we were instructed to place a ring on each candle, as Kristin’s family does at each birthday. Such a fun tradition!

To wash it all down, Austin called for a champagne toast where he shared the sweetest words and YES! Dropped to one knee and gave Kristin the best present ever:a promise to love her forever sealed with the most gorgeous diamond ring. I’m pretty sure her heart exploded, along with all of ours, and then the real celebrating and ugly crying began. It was a day no one wanted to end and I still have a smile plastered on my face thinking about it 4 months later.
